Luis Figo

Luis Figo bows out of international competition in what can only be foreshadowing his retirement from soccer altogether. The reason I find this so sad is that Figo was the last sports figure I totally admired and followed (and still follow at Inter Milan). A couple of years ago, I was overtaken by a disdain against professional sports that has led to turning my back on Real Madrid and the New York Yankees and all other professional teams. Luis Figo proved the only exception because of his leadership, humble ways and total dedication on the field. In an age when money seems to be the only determining factor for loyalty, Figo knew how to bow out with his head high and with dignity from a Real Madrid that has turned into a financial institution rather than a soccer club. That is why Figo is my last sports hero.
